Octomom's House to be Foreclosed On

This whole thing has a sense of deviousness to it. One of the founders of Vivid entertainment, which has been trying to get Octomom to appear in its movies, is now going to hold the note on Octomom's house.

Octomom, can't make the mortgage payments on her house, but there's supposed to be "no pressure" from Vivid. Hmmm, something seems rotten in Denmark to me.

It looks like the play from Hirsch is going to be something like "work for me, either in my movies or in my business, and you'll get to live in your house." Otherwise, GTFO.

Se Murio El Gocho

"El Gocho" is the nickname that just about all Venezuelans referred to Carlos Andres Perez, aka CAP, as. El Gocho was a consummate and lifetime politician that had some great ideas that benefited Venezuelan society as a whole.

El Gocho died of a heart attack today in Miami, FL. Peace be with El Gocho and his loved ones.

The current president of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, lead a failed coup attempt in 1992 against El Gocho. In the last 50 years, there has only been one traitor to the country and his name is Hugo Chavez.

How To Win A Negotiation

I always thought that "nickel and diming" meant something completely different. I've always understood it as the concept of charging small fees for things that should really be free, rather than as a negotiation ploy.

Internet Access In Venezuela To Be Censored

Hugo Chavez wins again. Only because he's cheating and has the cards stacked in his favor. In an effort to keep people from calling him an idiot, or stupid, or something else, El Chavo del 8 has passed a law making it illegal to "disrespect" public officials.

How do you disrespect a public official? Dunno, but I'm sure if you point out anything that he and his cronies don't like, that you're "disrespecting." By the way, the Venezuelan constitution "guarantees" free speech, so this new law, at the very least, is unconstitutional since it restricts speech.

Obviously, Chayvez lacks the mental capacity and the acumen to realize that he's attacking free speech, but he's never been a fan of free speech to begin with.

How do you define "disrespect" anyway?

As far as I can tell, the only person in Venezuela that "promote[s] hatred or create[s] anxiety in the citizenry or alter[s] public order" is Hugo Chavez himself.

When is he going to go back to jail for treason, among other things?

Hugo Chavez Loses Legal Battle

Now this is interesting. This is not a good thing for the people of Venezuela, but then again, neither is Hugo Chavez.

I can hear the rhetoric of his next speech already: 'the "empire" has stolen our assets in order to break us, but we will not stand down' and whatever.

What worries me the most, will be reprisals against both American interests, and the people of Venezuela. Hugo is not a mentally stable individual. I wouldn't put anything past him and his cronies.

On a side note, isn't it funny how the lawyers always get paid?

Twitter Analytics Now Available

Twitter announced today that the much awaited Twitter Analytics is now available to everyone not just beta testers. It'll be a paid add on feature. "Gots to get that paper boo."

That's good news for all the Twitter users that don't already get their stats elsewhere.

Chavez Gets Additional Powers

I really had no idea how stupid people could be. I had this mistaken notion that people wouldn't be this stupid, but I was mistaken.

I guess I should have remember my "Men In Black" where Agent K tells the soon to be Agent J something along the lines of:

A person is intelligent and reasonable, people are stupid

Chavez wants to institute a "new kind of democracy" in Venezuela. A kind of democracy that ignores checks and balances, that ignores congress, and that resides solely in his hands.

Do you know what that kind of "democracy" is called?

A dictatorship.

Julian Assange Is A Donkey

Read the following text at your own risk. It contains foul language etc. I'm a big fan of the Droid's.

Political topics are not the Droid's usual subject matter, but since Assange runs a website and is a little narcissistic prick, I can see why/ how the Droid decided to write about him.

I love the final frame of the video where it shows the score. On the other hand, the dude does have some dance moves.

Indian Ambassador Groped At Mississippi Airport

After she identified herself as an ambassador, she was pulled out of the security and groped, I mean frisked by a TSA employee. Apparently, the motivator was that she was wearing a sari, but that's speculation at this point.

I don't know the rules about diplomatic immunity and whatnot, but it seems to me like they should've just waved the ambassador through the line. Either that, or the ambassador should've chartered a plane.

Who voluntarily joins a botnet?

My question about this deal is who would voluntarily join a botnet to carry out attacks like this? I would. If I could trust the software and if I could isolate the botnet machine to its own network and not use the machine for anything other than that.

I think it's ludicrous that Visa and Mastercard have taken down Wikileaks ability to take payments but allow scammers and spammers to continue using their services with impunity.

The Body Farm

There's a 5 acre body farm outside San Marcos run by Texas State University. I've been wanting to go out there just to see what it's like, but I'm too chicken to actually go.

The research that they do out there is fascinating when you stop and think about it.

Spanish Alphabet Losing 2 Letters

I think that simplified spelling and grammar is a great thing. I can also see how some people could have a problem with accepting the edict of the Royal Spanish Academy.

What I can't stand, is seeing the illiterate, uneducated, demagogue Hugo Chavez being quoted, like he is some kind of mother truckin authority on the Spanish language.

Tall Buildings With Silly Names

This is a cool little photo montage over on the BBC's website. Apparently, the Brits have the tendency to give tall buildings silly names, whereas we in America tend to not do the same thing.

I don't know what a gherkin is, but I would've named that gherkin building something, completely different.

Obama's Internet Kill Switch, not Really Obama's

I love how the republican blowhards made this sound like it was an Obama creation. Turns out that the authority to shut off "any means of communication in time of emergency" rule was passed in 1942.

So, since 1942, every president since then has had the ability to kill communications at will during times of a national emergency. The blowhards, made it seem like it was an Obama power grab, when it's really not.

My biggest concern with the kill switch, is what will happen during the zombie apocalypse? Will they shut off the internet? Is that why no one in any zombie movie makes a reference to getting online and checking the status of things in other cities and so on?

On a serious note, I see the advantages in being able to sever an enemy's communication network. What I don't like, is that if/ since an enemy can use civilian communication channels, I may not be able to communicate with my family and loved ones.

That's what really bothers me.

Top Commandments Of Business Networking

This is a really cool article. It has 59 commandments of business networking, both when you are one on one and when in groups. Some of these are plain common sense, others are really cool, but all of them are great tips for networking.

One of the tips, talks about how to disengage from someone politely:

* You can tell them you don’t want to monopolize their time.
* You can tell them you see someone you need to speak with.
* You can excuse yourself to the restroom.
* You can tell them you’d like to continue meeting people.

Love those, and I think that I've had someone "disengage" with me using every one of those excuses. I wonder if it's something I say?

:-)

Hugo Chavez Prepares For A Third Coup d'etat

This is a Google translation of the Spanish text. Follow the link to read the original text in Spanish, but the point is this:

Hugo Chavez, despite what whiny bleeding heart liberals like Sean Penn, Danny Glover and Oliver Stone say, is really a despot and a dictator. Chavez is prepared to stage a third coup to retake power for himself, should he lose the general elections in 2012.

That's right, I said his third coup.

Chavez is the only person that has led a coup d' etat against the government of Venezuela in the last 50 years, not once but twice. When he leads the coup d' etat that he's already announced in 2012, it will be Chavez's third coup in 15 years.

If that's how you define a democratic government, I have some ocean front property for you Arizona that you can buy for cheap.

These were funny. I have been bit by the auto-correct feature but never thought to save a screen shot and send them anywhere.

Dead Blue Whales Wash Ashore In California

This is both sad and fascinating at the same time. I love the writer's description of the scene and I also agree with his thoughts on what will happen next.

The writer thinks that the prescence of the carcass will stimulate the proliferation of all kinds of little critters like crabs etc. that will feast upon the dead whale. The circle of life and all that.

Hospital Admits Performing Illegal Kidney Transplants

This is freaky. I remember when this story first broke back in 2003. The hospital denied that it knew anything and that anything even remotely like this was happening.

Basically, poor people, minors in some cases, were flown to South Africa to have a kidney removed. The kidney was then transplanted into wealthy Israelis and the hospital made a cut (no pun intended) of deal.

12 Things To Takeaway From Bush's Book

I don't know that this guy ever read a book, now he's written one. I'm really not the least bit surprised by any of these 12 points.

I do think it's funny that Kanye hurt his feelings. I guess Bush has that in common with Taylor Swift, but at least Taylor Swift was man enough to not whine about it in a book.

Airport Security Hits New Low

I think the last line in the story says it all. Eventhough there are no body scanners at the airport in question, people still have to follow the same procedures as if there were body scanners there.

To top it all off, am I the only person that finds it odd that these new multimillion dollar machines have trouble dealing with belts? Interestingly, or should it be ironically? The picture shows the real meaning of TSA: Three Standing Around.

An Englishman Walks Into A Presidential Press Conference...

This is an interesting story told by the BBC's John Simpson. He tells us about getting re-assigned to work from Montevideo Uruguay during the Falkland war between England and Argentina way back when.

Mr. Simpson essentially barged his way into a presidential press conference by the then military dictator General Alvarez.

I don't know that I see the correlation between General Alvarez's snafu on live TV and his getting demoted, but what do I know.

Top 10 Greatest Collaborative Moments Between Microsoft And Apple

This list was put together by a dude a Techrepublic. I don't know that these are necessarily the top 10 as much as they are THE 10 times that Microsoft and Apple have collaborated.

Seriously, can you think of a time, other than these 10? I don't know that Office 2004/2008 for Mac counts as a separate collaboration since they'd been releasing an "Office for Mac" product for years.

I won't count the time when Microsoft stole the concept of a GUI based OS from Apple who stole it from Xerox, since that was technically not collaborating.

Ignorance Is More Than Bliss, It's Chic

I love this article. It pretty much explains the rise of many reality TV shows which in turn explains the rise of The Ignorants of the Tea Party.

US Army Medic Donates Holocaust Diary To Museum

This is an amazing story. The soldier's name is Tony Acevedo, and he is the son of illegal immigrants.

He volunteered to serve during WWII, was captured during the Battle of the Bulge and was held prisoner in a slave labor camp. While in the camp, he continued his duties as an army medic and documented what he saw.

He documented deaths, documented how they were treated, documented what they were forced to do. He is the first person of Mexican American heritage to register as a survivor at the Holocaust Museum.

This man is a hero and should be treated as such.

Top 10 Most Retweeted Twitter Users According To Klout.com

Here are the top 3, for your amusment:

1. justinbieber—294,205 retweets
2. YouConfessarQue—183,437 retweets
3. LevanteaMao—95,255 retweets

#2 above translates into "I confess that" and #3 translates to "Raise your hand if."

It goes downhill from there. None of the "twitterati" like Scoble, Arrington, Brogan etc. are on the list of most retweeted. By a long shot.

Seems like the best way to get retweeted a lot, is to be a tween idol of some kind, be a fictional character or talk about something of dubious moral qualities.

Such is the price of fame.

Rio's Favelas As Seen Through A Camera Lens

Pedro Lobo is a Brazilian photojournalist that's been working to document the favelas of Rio. He looks at the structures that people create and tries to establish what the structure says about the people that created it.

His work is currently on exhibit at the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art and College of Charleston in Charleston, South Carolina. You can see more of his work on the favelas and their architecture on his personal website.

US Servicemen Flipping The North Koreans Off

I love this picture. To me, it embodies the saying "a picture is worth 1000 words." The servicemen told the North Koreans that the gesture was a Hawaiian good luck sign.

The North Koreans bought it. Hook, line and sinker. At least until Time magazine, in their infinite wisdom, explained what the gesture really meant in one of their articles.

Someone on twitter said that Palin can't expect to "go rogue" forever.

O'Donnell Doesn't Know The Constitution

Like most of the tea baggers I've seen and heard of, Christine O'Donnell seems to have no clue about what the Constitution says or what it means.

The first amendment of the bill of rights establishes the separation of church and state.

Here's the first amendment of the bill of rights:

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

The phrase "separation of church and state" was first used by Thomas Jefferson and it is used in reference to the passage above. Although the phrase "separation of church and state" is not in the constitution, the first amendment establishes the separation in its language.

Just made up a stupid song. Sing this to the tune of "Trogdor the burninator:" "Server Administratooooor, changinating the server, changinating permissions, changinating all the server.... Server warns of dangers, but he does it anywayyyyyyy cuz he's the Server Administratoooooooooor."Here's the tune, in case you need it:OK, yes, I think I'm losing it. http://bit.ly/dlK5to

Iranian Jets Being Denied Fuel In Europe

Looks like some western oil companies are refusing to sell fuel to Iranian jets in Europe. If I recall correctly, the sanctions against Iran have a provision that says something about any company that does business with Iran could potentially be liable/ be open to sanctions as well.

Looks like western companies are taking the threat seriously and are not selling aviation fuel to the Iranian flagship airline. Interesting.

Immigration Authorities Looking For Frauds Through Social Media

Pretty much the same principle as if you were to throw something out in the trash. It becomes public information that can, and apparently will, be used against you.

We already knew they looked through social media for people since that's how they've found several fugitives, but here you have it.

Chilean Flag Instead Of Texas Flag On Some Ballots

This is just plain silly, in a Monty Python sort of way. Apparently, the folks in Atascosa county Texas had been using the Chile flag on their absentee ballots for years before anyone noticed. It took a Texan living in Japan to notice that the wrong flag was on the ballot.

How To Shoot Pictures Of Airplanes In Flight

This is a really cool article about shooting pictures of airplanes for magazine covers and advertising prints. It turns out, that the best platform to shoot pictures of planes from is a B-25 Mitchell bomber.

The writer says that he gets into the tail gunner position on a B-25 harnesses in and then takes his shots. Not quite the kind of shooting at planes that the designers had in mind, but it's good to know that they're still using the position on the plane for something.

Here's a picture of the tail gunner position from my flickr page:

PETA Ad Banned From Airports

I like to think the reason the ad was banned is due to peta being a terrorist organization that supports fire bombing university research labs and harbors arsonists. Or maybe the ads got banned because peta has a large euthanization facility at their headquarters in Virginia and are therefore a bunch of hypocrits with a holier than thou attitude.

.ly Domains Must Now Comply With Sharia Law

Apparently, the Libyan government has started ceasing ,ly domains that are not in compliance with Sharia law in Libya. Two things came to mind when I read that.

1. Is Sharia law different in each muslim country?
2. The people that use (and the people that own) bit.ly and ow.ly may have some issues moving forward.

Here's my bonus:

3. WTF????

Seems to me that the Libyan government is full of depraved assholes that want to impose their shite laws on everyone else. It may well be within their right to restrict who can register domains in their country and what the domains are used for, but it's still bullshit.

Dutch MP Geert Wilders Goes On Trial

This is a tough issue for me. I lived in Holland for a number of years, and know the country to be a great place to live. I love Dutch society and how tolerant and open it is.

From what I know of the Koran, MP Wilders has a valid point in wanting to limit the Koran's influence on Dutch society. I don't necessarily agree with his methods, but I definitely agree with what he's trying to do.

I don't feel that he has incited any hatred of anything.

I feel that MP Wilders has done nothing but point out the beliefs and the writings in the Koran for all to see. If anything, MP Wilders has been proselytizing about the Koran for years.

The Revolution Will Not Be Tweeted

This is a really interesting article about activism in the age of social media. I like how the author concludes that most activism that happens on social media is of the "weak link" variety.

I agree that people tend to do what takes the smallest amount of effort, like adding a twibbon to their avatar, rather than making a physical commitment to attend an event or make a substantial financial contribution.

Using Android is like peeing in your pants for warmth

Gotta love analogies like this. On a more serious note, I'm not sure if I agree with Anssi or not.

I see his point about the OS. Just look at the PC industry for a parallel. It doesn't matter if your PC is made by Dell or HP, you get the same OS and so the hardware, to a certain point, is irrelevant.

The point where I separate from Anssi, is on the "what do consumers want?" point. If consumers want Android OS devices, then that's what they'll get. As a manufacturer, that wants to stay in business, I say it behooves Anssi (and Nokia) to deliver what the consumer wants to buy.

I read an article a while back that said that Nokia makes a phone every 13 seconds. The article also said that Nokia got their start making and selling car tires. I'm pretty sure Nokia can adapt to the market, if they need to.

Rural Africans And Biogas For Home Use

This is actually a pretty cool idea. I only recently discovered this blog and I've already fallen in love with it. The blog's tag line says it all: "Solving everyday problems with African ingenuity."

The particular problem I've highlighted here, is about getting clean fuel to your home for cooking. Apparently, there are huge amounts of cow dung available in Africa that people can convert into clean burning methane gas.

Talk about killing several birds with one stone. They get clean burning fuel, get rid of dung, plus stop chopping down trees for firewood all in one fell swoop.

I think that there are parts of South America where some of this same ingenuity can be applied, or even better, I'm sure there are some South American fixes to problems that the Africans haven't figured out, yet.

Someone should invent a tool that lets people communicate instantaneously. Something like a worldwide web of computers interconnected with each other so people can share ideas across oceans and communicate.

Wouldn't that be great?

Brazil's Wacky Elections

I know very little about Brazilian politics. It'd be interesting to see a ploy like what this clown is doing here in the states.

Can you imagine? Some dude dressed as a clown, although he happens to be a professional clown, running for the house of representatives here? If he were to win, his opponent in the next election could legitimately say "get the clown out!"

OK, I'm having too much fun with this as it is.

The BBC Wants Your Pictures

I think this is a cool little promo these folks have going on. Coincidentally, I have several "school" type events to go to, so I'll be sending in a couple of pictures.

I'll let y'all know if any of them get picked.

Project Husband, aka "Muriel's Wedding" IRL

For you non web-a-holics out there, "IRL" means "In Real Life."

Seriously, this sounds a lot like that Australian movie "Muriel's Wedding." The premise of that movie, much like this lady's deal, is essentially this: Muriel wants to get married, no matter what the circumstances and no matter to whom.

I'm not saying that this lady has the same intentions as Muriel, but in my opinion, it really puts a hamper on things like dating when you know that you have a wedding coming up.

Is this just a case of someone that has taken the fraudulent "law" of attraction to its Nth level, or is it something else entirely?

I wish her the best, seriously, I do. I'll be paying attention on Feb 15 to see if she does indeed get married to someone else or just pulls a Dennis Rodman type of stunt.

Tea Party Wins Big

I'll admit, I know nothing about this lady. Apparently, not many other people do either. Her claim to fame, comes from being the candidate that Sarah Palin backed in this race.

The "Tea Party" in general reminds me of a line from that movie "Men in Black." It's the scene where Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones) and Agent J (Will Smith) are sitting on the park bench just after K tells J that he has to make the choice to join the MIB.

Agent K says something like: "A person is the most intelligent, sensible and rational human being possible. "People" are stupid." Or something like that anyway.

The rise of the Tea Party reminds me of another quote: "dark times, they are a comin."

Communist Cuba Opts For Capitalism To Boost Economy

I find this to be quite amusing. While Chavez and other idiots are trying to hail Cuba as the model of a socialist/ communist economy that they want to copy, the Cubans are trying to embrace capitalist principles.

Raul and Fidel are wanting to reduce the role of the national government in the economy, they also want to encourage entreprenuership, encourage people to borrow money to raise capital for their businesses, they want micro-industries to hire employees etc.

Dunno about you, but to me, it almost sounds like Raul and Fidel are closet Republicans. I don't think I mean that in a bad way either.

Terry Jones Backs Down From "Burn A Koran Day"

This is the kind of thing that just makes you sick. This guy is totally within his legal right to go on with his little book burning event, but has decided not to go through with it.

I'm thinking of calling him a "media whore" or maybe a "wimp" or some other word that calls his testicular fortitude into question, but I won't. I think this guy really just choked under the pressure of intense media scrutiny.

Just like it's within his rights to carry on with the event, he's also within his rights to cancel, or suspend, or whatever it.

Terry, canceling this event may have been the right thing to do. However, I feel that you just proved that we have a yellow belly. Once you kill the pig you gotta eat the bacon.

Cool Steampunk Computers

I like these peripherals and computers. These all look like custom jobs, rather than something you'd buy off the shelf.

About the only one that I feel like I could reproduce, is the Mac Mini in the tin can. I think I can effectively reproduce that one. All I need, is a Mac Mini.

Overpriced Things We Buy

This list starts off strong, but then ends in a wimper. The original site has 6 things on the list, the other 3 items are bottled water, printer ink and name brand fashion.

Sorry, but to me, having "name brand fashion" on the list is lame. Greeting cards are kind of iffy to me, but I'll agree with the rest of the items on the list.

What would you add to this list?

I'll add electricity as an overpriced item. Why? Because even though my utility company isn't paying more for fuel, isn't building new infrastructure, isn't issuing any bonds to pay for new projects or anything even remotely like that they continue to increase what I have to pay per Kw/h.

Then, they have the brass cojones to announce record profits and claim that it's due to their great "management" and want to talk about how management deserves a raise for the great work they're doing.

Quran Burning Church Won't Back Down

For the record, I don't agree with what these guys are doing. I don't believe in burning any kind of books.

I think that it's great that these guys aren't backing down. It's their first amendment right to express themselves in this fashion, so more power to them.

They are constitutionally protected in doing so. Guess who else is constitutionally protected for wanting to build something or another near some other place?

New Mexico's Susana Martinez the Future Of The GOP?

Here's the money quote in this article:

“You can’t really hate and get away with it in New Mexico,” said Antonio Maestas, a Democratic state representative from Albuquerque. “That’s why it was shocking when she got away with it in the primary."

You shouldn't be able to get away with hate anywhere. You shouldn't be a demagogue. You should clearly state your intentions when you want to get elected into office.

I like that she opposes reviewing the 14th amendment, and I don't necessarily disagree about police checking immigration status of suspects, provided they check EVERYONE'S status.

I don't like her hints of demagoguery.

What else have you got GOP? Seems like all you have are potential demagogues and racists. Not that you're much different from the Democrats in that respect.

Can some party just throw me a bone?

Does It Matter If You're Not a Journalist?

I like how this article addresses this issue. At times, I struggle with the idea of whether I'm a "journalist" or not.

It used to be, that only people that were published in a magazine, or a newspaper were "real" journalists. The rest of us were just "wannabees" or "not good enough to get a job writing for the paper" or the second rung plain and simple "bloggers."

Bottom line, I keep a "journal" which makes me a by default makes me a "journalist." The thing is, that it's more complicated than that.

I like how the article explores the question of "acts of journalism" and whether or not something has "journalistic value." I'll be the first to admit that I hardly ever commit "acts of journalism" and that most of my stuff has little to no "journalistic value" but does that really make it any less important?

What do you think?

Woman Sues After Getting Kicked Off Facebook

Apparently, she thinks that she got booted for starting a petition page to get Facebook to increase their friend limit on personal pages to beyond 5000. To me, that dog don't hunt.

There's more to this, lots more, but we're not being told what it is. Regardless, I'm sure in the Facebook TOS there's a clause that this lady broke.

Tigers call up St. Pierre after 978 games in minors

This is a pretty cool story. Having read Seth Godin's "The Dip," it makes me wonder if he should've quit sooner.

Obviously, the payoff for him was not monetary. Still, how many people would keep playing in the minors, getting paid in peanuts, for the off chance to get to go to "the show?"

Check out my Texas sports blog for news about central Texas sports teams.

Why the Neo-Conned Tea Party Movement Used a Harmless NYC Muslim Community Center as a Political Football

I love this article. I have to admit, every time I link to, or say something nice about an Alex Jones article or site, I always feel like my name is getting added to a watch list somewhere.

I love the part where the author says:

the return of the Neo-con faction is in an all out assault against the foundations of our country, the two things which make the United States of America unique in the world, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

I also really like that he calls SB1070 "Arizona's racial profiling law" which is one of the names that I've been calling that law. The other name I like to use is "Jim Crow 2.0."

I'm glad to see I'm not the only person that noticed the assault by the neocons on the constitution. Hopefully more people will become aware of the neocon's true agenda.

NH Teen, Zaps Nipples During Shop Class Sues School District

I'm sorry, but I posit that this kid had brain damage before he performed this little stunt. Seriously, how stupid do you have to be to even think of doing something like this?

I'd like to know where the teacher was when this little stunt happened, but I don't think anyone needs to be sued over this.

It doesn't say if the kids plugged the cord into an electrical socket, but I imagine that that's what they did.

Seems like most people know, specially by the time they get to high school, that electrical cords are dangerous and if you plug them into the wall, you will get shocked. Why didn't the parents teach this basic life lesson to their kid?

Definitely not Bender's robot.txt file

I was perusing the fredericiana.com blog looking for some info about a plugin when I came across a post with some geek humor. I like that you don't need to be particularly savvy to figure out the original joke.

The Bender I'm referring to is a robot on a TV show called "Futurama."

One of Bender's main programing functions is to: "Kill all humans." Which is why I said that this robots.txt file wasn't Bender's...

OK, nevermind, I think I just killed this joke.

The Most Isolated Man on the Planet

It almost sounds like a play on "the most interesting man in the world." I am, indeed fascinated by this story.

Why?

Because here's a guy that lives without a smart phone, no google, no car, no indoor plumbing, none of the things that most of us consider "essential." This guy has no need or use for money, probably never gets sick and lives as close to how our early ancestors lived when they first climbed down from the trees.

Ah, the calm and tranquility that only being disconnected from the wired/ wireless modern world can bring.

How To Create Viral Content

The reason I like this article, is that not only does the writer tell you what to do, he shows you samples of how to do it right and how not to do it. The main reason I dislike this post, is that you can't really create viral content.

Content goes viral, or it does not.

You can do things to help content go viral, but you can't just "create" viral content. Why do I say it like that? Because you don't make content go viral, your readers/ fans/ subscribers make your content go viral by sharing it.

Retired Stalker: Facebook Making Gen Y Stalkers Lazy

3 Colombian Teens on Facebook 'Hit List' Killed

Yikes! Everyone on the list was, or had been given 3 days to get out of town or face execution.

Parents who have kids on the list have started to send their kids out of town, in compliance with the terms.

I wonder if people will protest against Facebook opening an office in their neighborhood since terrorists are using Facebook. I'm pretty sure that something like this is against the Facebook Terms Of Service.

Houses Made From Airplanes

The aviation geek within me loves the idea, but the practical person in me questions the execution of this idea. I'd love to convert an old jetliner into a vacation home or something like that. I don't know that it would be a practical "live in all the time" home.

Although, $30k for a house isn't too bad.

It Will Take Months To Rescue 33 Miners Trapped In Chile

The claustrophobic part of me freaks out just reading about this. I imagine that they're in a dark, dank place, not particularly comfortable and probably very smelly.

It's not like they can go out to use the rest room.

They're estimating it will take about 4 months to drill a hole big enough to bring these miners out to the surface. I hope that's a conservative estimate and it doesn't really take that long.

I know I wouldn't make it trapped underground for 4 months.

Florida News: Church Vows To Burn Copies Of The Quran

In another demonstration of their incredible powers of stupidity, a Florida based church wants to burn copies of the Quran, or Koran, or however you spell it. Why do they want to burn islam's holy book? To commemorate the anniversary of September 11.

I feel that there are better ways to commemorate that anniversary. I don't think it's appropriate to burn books, it's just a little too middle ages for my taste.

Besides, look at the picture below and tell me the look on the face of the guy with the sign that reads "stop systemized provocation of muslims!" isn't just adorable.

Florida, the state that gave us the Wheelie King, is trying to retake the lead from Arizona in the race to the bottom of the intelligence barrel.

Burning books is alive and well in the 21st century, thanks to Florida.

Iran's Ambassador Of Death

I don't know what to make of this device. Apparently, it's a defensive and deterrent weapon, but Ahmadinejad said that the unmanned aircraft was an:

"Ambassador of death for the enemies of humanity, [that] has a main message of peace and friendship."

In other words, "you're either with us, or you're against us, and if you're against us, we're gonna killya." Didn't W say something like that at one point in time?

Anyway, they didn't release any specs on the craft, so as far as I know, it'll only work against people that have no radio signal jamming capabilities and no anti-aircraft capabilities either.

YouTube Stars That Make More Than $100k A Year

Obviously, I say take all these numbers with a grain of salt, since they are only estimates. Even if the actual numbers were only half as much as estimated, it's still not a bad living.

Now I really know that I'm in the wrong business. I think I have finally figured out what I want to be when I grow up. Good thing too, since I turn 40 this December.

OMG, I turn 40 in December.

Show Me Your Immigration Papers

I wonder what kind, if any, of proof of immigration status this lovely couple presented. Oh wait, I forgot, they're rednecks not brown skinned, so they don't have to present immigration papers.

The fugitives are said to be "Fiance-cousins" or some such lovely thing. Whence me calling them "rednecks."

Oil In The Gulf: There's A Lot More Than We Thought

I like to think that anything that Tony Hayward says is wrong. It's wrong because he's clueless, or it's wrong because he's lying. Either way, if Hayward said it, it's wrong.

Back when the well exploded, on Earth Day nonetheless, I don't think that anyone could have foretold that the well would spew oil into the ocean for 4 months. I think we all thought that there were expensive and state of the art safeguards in place to keep oil from just spewing into the ocean.

No way anyone thought that oil would flow unfettered into the ocean for as long as it did.

Indeed, there were safeguards, it's just that BP ignored them, or had a government issued waiver to ignore them.

Ultimately, a company like BP, or any other company for that matter, is in the business of making money. BP makes money by cheaply extracting as much oil from the ground as possible, processing it and then selling that oil for as much profit as possible. The environment be damned.

My question is this: Now what?

What do we do now? Are we just supposed to go on about our day like nothing happened? Are we supposed to ignore the 22 mile long plume of oil 3000 feet beneath the surface?

Chances are, we will go on with our lives as if nothing happened in the gulf. Except that I have that stupid Blue Sky Mine song by Midnight Oil stuck in my head.

Muslim Leaders To Abandon "Ground Zero Community Center"

If this is true, it's really sad. Not because I sympathize with terrorists, or support them. It's sad because America was founded on the idea of religious freedom.

These people, whether we like it or not, have the constitutionally protected right to build their mosque there. The fact that they now may change their minds, due to the bigotry of a few hypocrites is only a victory for intolerance and hate.

The people that brought down the towers, all conspiracy theories aside, were extremist terrorists. Not all muslims agree with them, nor should all muslims be condemned for the actions of a few.

Every religion has people that corrupt God's message and use it for hate. How long until they start singling out your religion?

Package with cow tongue halts commuter trains

Looks like someone was watching "The Devil's Advocate." Remember that scene? Keanu Reeves is down in the basement and that dude is putting nails in the cow tongue in some kind of weird ritual against the prosecuting attorney?

Someone watched that, got the idea, executed on it and then left the cow tongue on the metrorail train tracks. Out of what I can only call "an abundance of caution" the police and capmetro stopped all the commuter trains while they sorted out what was going on.

Welcome to Austin!

Couple Stoned To Death In Afghanistan

The group formerly known as the "Moujahadin" or what Reagan used to call the "Freedom Fighters" but now known as the Taliban sentenced this couple to death by stoning.

The now evil and hated Taliban, used to be called "Freedom Fighters" in the 80s. You may remember them from the whole Iran-Contra thing. Or perhaps from their previous war against the Russians when Russia invaded Afghanistan back in the day.

They beat the Russians back then with what amounted to rocks and sticks, just like they are beating us right now.

Tips For Setting Photography Prices

There are 3 more tips on the original site, but these 3 are the ones that spoke to me. This is good to know now that I'm ramping up my video production company.

It's All About The Benjamins

This article is a really great read. I'd never heard the concept of "minimum monthly expenses" described as a "nut" before.

The situation described below, is pretty much me right now.

Yes, I'm "opening the kimono," being transparent, authentic or however else you want to describe what I'm doing. Yes, it's scary as all get out.

The point is, until I read this, I didn't have the words to express what I'm going through. I really don't know what's making me express this right now, on such a public medium.

Maybe I'm taking off my mask.

Maybe I'm just tired of living paycheck to paycheck.

Maybe I'm just crazy for sharing.

In actuality, I feel a certain sense of relief in writing this. Now, I can stop worrying about people finding out I'm broke, and start making myself "un-broke." Now, I feel like I can concentrate on fixing what's broken, rather than simply trying to hide it.

Sen. Reid, A True Immigration Hypocrite

Politicians, at time, make me sick to my stomach. Other times, it's much worse. Harry Reid is definitely a hypocrite when it comes to his stance on immigration issues.

First of all, I object to the assertion that all Hispanics share the same position on illegal immigration. We don't.

Secondly, Sen. Reid seems to have forgotten all about his previous stance on immigration. Seems like he's trying to pander to a specific ethnic group in order to win their votes. I'm just having a hard time figuring out what group he's trying to pander to.

Third, I love the conclusion that the author comes to. I love how she says that it only took "47 years of marriage and two decades in the senate for Reid to talk to his wife and his constituents". Nice.

I have a lot more Latino news items over at TheLatinoPodcast.com.

I love this article. Mostly because it shines the light of the truth onto Hugo Chavez. I love that they called out that Chavez wants to "run the economy for his personal political benefit" and that they're also calling Chavez out on his love and support of the FARC.

I'm happy that Colombia has begun to pull itself out from the doldrums that they were in before Uribe came to power. I can see Brazil and Colombia becoming economic power houses while Venezuela, getting ransacked by the chavistas, flails in the wind.

Am I crazy for thinking this looks like a lot of fun?

The Most Overused Buzzwords and Marketing Speak in Press Releases | Adam Sherk

I'm glad to see "paradigm shift" is moving down the list.

How to NOT do SEO

I love the comment that this isn't even black hat, it's ass hat.

Internet Kill-Switch Debate

This whole thing just has bad news written all over it. Why does the fed need an internet kill switch? My inner Alex Jones is going crazy over the idea of a kill switch.

Best Wedding Reception... Evar

Can you imagine this party?

Castro On The Podium Again

This is the kind of devotion that Chay-vez is looking for. Chavez wants to turn Venezuela into the Cuba of South America. He's already well on his way.

The Real Reason You're Broke

I don't disagree that people spend too much money on their car, but I disagree that this is the real reason people are broke. I don't have a car payment, and I'm broke, so I'm either an exception to the rule or the rule is not true.

Back when I was a car salesman, I can tell you that a lot of people came in upside down on their trades (owe more on the loan than the car is worth) and would want to trade just because of that. The car was in good condition, they were just "tired" of it, knew they were upside down and wanted to trade to a flashier model.

Dostoevsky On The Moscow Subway

I know the scenes they are talking about in the podcast. I can tell you, that I'd love to go see this subway station.

I posted the audio on my blog Rafael Marquez Online, but of course you can always just click through to the NPR page as well.

No More Cussing At Work

In light of the recent incident with the JetBlue flight attendant, I don't think that I could do my work if I couldn't somehow vent. I think I would just close the door to my office so my office mates couldn't hear me.

It's not that I cuss like a sailor or anything like that, just occasionally, I feel the need to bust out and "son of a motherless goat" doesn't always cut it.

New York Is A Tech Backwater

Foursquare recently moved from Austin to New York City for some reason or another. I don't know if, or think, that they saw this article before moving there.

I wonder, if they had seen this article, would they still have moved?

I'd also like to see how Austin compares to both New York and Silicon Valley in terms of startup funding etc. I know it dried out for a bit right after the bubble burst, but I've heard that VC investing is starting to pick up again.

Flight Attendant Curses Passenger Escapes Using Emergency Slide

This is funny, to a certain degree. I love that the guy grabbed 2 beers on his way out. I loved that he had the gumption to first curse out the passenger that wouldn't apologize for hitting him on the head with a bag over the plane's PA.

Sometimes, I think that enough is enough.

Puberty strikes 7-year-old girls

This really bothers me. I think that all of the hormones and other junk that goes into our food is to blame for this. You can't tell me that all those growth hormones that they give cows and chickens have nothing to do with this phenomenon.

In a different part of the article, they say that back in the 1700s girls didn't start menstruating until they were 17-18 years old. They speculate that back then the reason for the late menstruation was due to malnutrition. Now that food is plentiful, girls are entering puberty at a younger age.

I don't think that an abundance of food is to blame.

I think that all the hormones and all the other crap that they put in our food is to blame. I have a 6 year old daughter and now I'm worried about her menstruating when she's 7 or 8, instead of 10-12.

I know the inevitable is coming, but I want my little girl to be a little girl for as long as is natural. I don't want her to go through puberty at an early age because of the food that I'm feeding her. I can't very well start growing my own food.

Top 10 SEO Blogs by Subscribers

This is a list published by Lee Oden over on his Top Rank site. The interesting thing, is that some of my favorites aren't on there. The biggest site missing, is seobook.com. The reason, apparently, is that SEObook doesn't publish their feedburner numbers or something like that.

Ironically, I do not subscribe to any of these blogs. I only read them when I catch something on twitter that grabs my attention and makes me want to click. I was subscribed, via email, to marketingpilgrim, but I unsubscribed when I discovered I didn't want to read everything they posted.

I was surprised to see hubspot on the list. Given how much content those guys put out, I actually would've been more surprised had they not been on the list.

Naked rollercoaster 'record broken'

It was a fund raising event to help a local hospital in England buy a new mammogram machine. The BBC has a video from the event, and unless you work at Dell or someplace like that, the video is safe for work.

Can you imagine doing something similar to that here in the states? I bet we could get more than 102 people to ride a roller coaster nekkid, what I doubt is that we'll find a venue that will let the event take place.

10 ways to schedule Facebook status updates

I don't think that the most important activity anyone does on Facebook is to update their status. To me, the most important activity is cyber stalk... I mean, keeping up with old and new friends :-).

Having said that, I can see that scheduling status updates can be something useful.

I like the free tools below, because well, I'm cheap like that. On thecopypasteblog, they have a step by step break down of how to schedule your status updates using the various tools. Here are the 10 tools:

1. Tweedeck
2. Hootsuite
3. CoTweet
4. Su.pr
5. Social Tomorrow
6. Later Bro
7. Sendible
8. Social Oomph (formerly known as tweetlater)
9. Schedule Facebook updates via email
10. Selective Tweets Facebook Application

I've used the scheduling features of Hootsuite and love it.

Embraer Steals The Show At Farnborough 10

I've written about Embraer becoming a player in the global aviation market over on my aviation news site. By contrast Bombardier, a Canadian company that competes with Embraer in the same market segment, got 0 orders for their new C-Series jet at Farnborough.

It's good to see other people realizing what I've known for a while now. Oba, Oba, Brasil!

Actress Is Identified in Hewlett-Packard Scandal

There's something not quite right with this story. Am I the only one that thinks there's more to this than what we're being told?

Body Scan Images From Security Checkpoints Were Saved By Feds

Our government at work. One idiot tries to blow up his crotch and now we all have to be subjected to this invasive search. This is bull.

Ben Franklin said:

"They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety."

These full body scanners are a horrible, horrible idea and they are utterly and completely useless.

Hall of Fame inductees reflect on honor

There were other people inducted today, I only posted these 2 since I talked about them the other day.

Oregon girl not bitter after lemonade flap

Not sure how I feel about this. Food safety rules are in place for a reason, right?

Why Emmitt Smith's Record Will endure

I was always partial to Emmitt Smith back in the day. Not only because he was a Cowboy, but because he seemed to always stay on the right path. unlike the other Cowboys of the late 90s, Emmitt was never associated with hookers, cocaine or anything negative and I always respected that about him.

I also enjoyed his performance on Dancing With The Stars too. I guess the fancy footwork on the field translates well to the dance floor.

I'm working on getting more content for my Texas sports blog and I'm open to suggestions as far as what to populate that site with. Thanks!

Despite Rhetoric, Illegal Immigration Provides Benefits to States

I found a reference to the study by the Texas Comptroller's office that outlined the economic benefits that the State of Texas reaps from illegal immigrants.

Have y'all seen any similar studies from other states?

Do Demographic Changes Influence Anti-Illegal Immigration Measures?

This article raises an interesting question. How much of the anti-immigration measures and sentiment around the country is being fueled by demographic changes in local communities?

I had not thought about that at all.

Jury convicts Sypher of extortion

I dunno, but I would've been tempted to pay up just to keep the tryst quiet. I mean, 15 seconds?

Mexicana Airlines Suspends Ticket Sales

I'm not sure how not selling tickets is going to help with the bankruptcy proceedings, but then again, I'm not a bankruptcy expert.

What I do know, is that they sure do lease a large percentage of their 61 aircraft fleet. Depending on how those lease agreements are structured, they may come out of bankruptcy a much, much smaller airline than they were when they went in.

Nolan Ryan Buys The Texas Rangers

I couldn't think of anything really catchy and short. I was thinking "Former Astros Buys The Rangers" but then I thought that doesn't make any kind of sense, so I changed my mind.

In any case, it looks like Ryan and his partners will come up with a total of $593 million. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the Rangers sign Alex Rodriguez to a contract worth $250 million? How were they planning on paying that when they were practically broke?

Add the Rangers to the list of companies and organizations that George W. Bush had a hand in managing that have gone bankrupt.

Note: This post is also on my Texas Sports blog

Perpetual Traffic Formula Review

This is a review of the most recent frauduct, I mean product, from Ryan Deiss. After months, if not years, of claiming that SEO and free traffic sucks and that there's no such thing as free traffic etc. now he's claiming that there is such a thing as free traffic and that SEO doesn't suck. He has the "secret" key and it'll only cost you $1997 to get it.

Yawn.

The Politics of Scapegoating

This is a really cool article. I like that he addresses the scapegoating issue, but I don't like that he didn't take it to the next step.

To me, the next step would be to explore who stands to make money from this whole thing. He could've examined which extreme right/ neo nazi groups are financing politicians that will likely gain political favor with a portion of the electorate.

I would also have liked him to address how the racialized minorities could or should take political action and flex their political muscles as well.

Going Vertical

This is an F-22 Raptor and an F-15 Eagle going vertical. I wanted to post this to remind you that I'm a huge airplane nerd, lest my recent political rants make you forget.

Idiot Cheats At Bass Fishing Tournament

I'm happy this guy got caught cheating. I can almost hear Cartman saying that if you get caught all you have to do is apologize and say "I misinterpreted the rules."

I'm also happy that this cheater's name was "Mike Hart" and not Mustaffah or Juan or something like that.

Can you imagine?

I can hear Newt Gingrich talking smack about how foreigners come here to cheat and to take advantage of the system and whatnot. I bet not a single one of the conservative pundits say a word about this.

World Cup Pictures

These are cool pictures from the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. The Boston Globe always has good pictures from various events, and these pictures do not disappoint.

McCain Shows His True Xenophobic Colors

I knew this guy was trouble. When he picked the bimbecile Palin to be his running mate, that was just boneheaded and stupid, but now we have this. He wants to take rights away from US citizens.

What the h.e. double hockey sticks is wrong with these people?

Taking Photos In Public Places Is Not A Crime

This is great news for us wandering iPhotographers, and the rest of us that walk around with a camera on us at all times.

Defending the Fourteenth Amendment

There has to be something seriously wrong with you and your cognitive abilities if you think repealing or modifying the 14th amendment will do anything to stymie illegal immigration.

No Rules Wild Swimming

I call this "off road swimming" instead of "wild swimming." The official name, or rather the name that swimmers use to describe this type of swimming is "open water" swimming. Given a choice, I'd go off road and swim in a river before swimming in a pool.

Of course, some rivers aren't meant for swimming because they are too polluted, and others have current that's too fast or aren't deep enough, but that's a whole other story.

Here in Austin, we have several places that you can go to experience open water swimming. There's Barton Creek pool, but there are also lots of swimming beaches out on Lake Travis, and if you're really into it you can even race in an open water race.

One of my favorite open water races happens in Town Lake every spring and it's called the "Cap2k." It's 2000 meters in Town Lake, from Red Bud island to the Texas Rowing Dock. It's an awesome race and it's "downhill" meaning that you're swimming with the current and not against it.

There are a whole lot of other open water races, check out the ASA's website for more information on how to particiapte.

Point being, if you have the chance, I recommend you check out those swim races and join the "off road" swimming club.

Breastfeeding Law?

I think that breastfeeding is a good idea. As a man, I have no personal experience with the time commitment etc. that it takes to breastfeed.

My personal experience is limited to making sure that all the necessary accoutrements for gathering, storage and preservation of breast milk are present. The other thing I can say is that both my kids were breastfed and they have, so far, both been really healthy.

I know they didn't get as many infections as formula fed kids, but I can't sit here and say empirically that it was due to them being breastfed. I disagree that there should be a "law" but I do think it should be "strongly encouraged" whenever it's possible.

Angry Bristol car owner jailed for grabbing helicopter

I'd be angry if a helicopter blew some "debris" into my Range Rover too, but I doubt that I'd go running after it as it took off. I think jail is a tad harsh, anger management definitely, but a year in jail seems a tad much to me. \

N'est pas?

31 Days of Video - Video #2

Five ways to ruin your website

I like what he says about subscriptions. 6 years ago, when I created my first website, I wanted people to subscribe to cut out comment spam. Fortunately, I figured out other ways to cull spam and keep comments.

The rest of the items, in the list pretty much outline how big sites like MSN, Bing, Yahoo, ABC, Mashable etc. handle their pages. I don't think that those big sites are going to change, ever. I really disagree with his comments on links that open in new windows. In any case, the article is still a decent read.

Media Companies Try Getting Social With Tumblr

What's the big deal with tumblr? I just started using it, but I'm just not digging it.

Building your brand (and keeping your job)

Cool article in Fortune about Scott Monty and building your personal brand

Levelator Software

This is great software that lets you level out the volume of people on a podcast or other audio recording. If you've ever listened to a recording where 1 person is really loud, and the other party is very low, you need this software. The best part about this software package is the price. It's free!

3 Cool WordPress Content Sliders

Cool free and premium Wordpress themes

I like how these folks took the time to organize the themes. It's not just a willy nilly list of themes, but rather a well organized (one column, two column, photoblog, etc.) collection of themes for WordPress.

This is the best organized collection of themes that I've seen anywhere, it's not necessarily the most comprehensive, it's simply the best organized.
